Job Description

Texas Health Physicians Group is seeking a part time Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) for their Microbiology laboratory.

Position Summary:

Under general supervision, performs serological, bacteriological, biochemical, hematological and microbiological laboratory examinations and tests for use in treatment and diagnosis of disease.

Locations and Hours:

  • North Point Laboratory (9229 LBJ Freeway, Dallas, TX 75243)

  • Part Time; Variable Shifts including weekends; 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM


  • Minimum - $24.84

  • Maximum - $36.65

  • Please note salary is determined by the number of years of experience



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology required

  • Associates Degree and 2 years’ experience in lieu of degree

  • Bachelor’s Degree is highly preferred


  • 3 years’ experience in Microbiology preferred

License and Certification:

  • MT – Medical Technologist Certified by ASCP, AMT, HEW, HHS or NCA upon hire

  • Or CHT – Certified Histocompatibility Technology upon hire


  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, equipment and techniques of medical technology

  • Ability to effectively prioritize and problem resolution

  • Demonstrates the ability to analyze situations to make operational decision to meet clinical demands

  • Demonstrates customer-focused service skills

  • Demonstrates verbal and written communication adequately to facilitate training of laboratory and non-laboratory staff, to communicate specimen collection, effective handle requirements and provide assistance and support to laboratory and other health care staff

  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal and organizational skills

  • Basic computer knowledge

Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs several tasks for determinations on different bodily fluids (e.g. pregnancy tests, urinalysis, and complete blood counts)

  • Confirms and verifies test results and reports findings to clinicians

  • Collects body fluids and material (e.g. urine, blood, and throat cultures)

  • Maintains a log of supplies used in the laboratory and keeps area stocked with supplies

  • Prepares specimens to be stored or transported to the reference laboratory

  • Advises clinicians and other health care providers on proper methods of collection of specimens

  • Operates, calibrates, and conducts performance checks on clinical laboratory equipment

  • Performs and reviews quality controls in testing, determining if results are within acceptable ranges, researching problems and making appropriate corrections

  • Serves as a resource for medical laboratory technicians, laboratory assistants and other laboratory personnel in troubleshooting problems with analytical and pre-analytical phases of the laboratory testing process

  • Performs other duties as assigned
